About Interstate Rentals
Interstate Rentals began in 1953, after our father, Joseph Dennis, moved from Nebraska with his wife, Jean, and infant son, Joe Jr., to take a shot at the budding rentals industry in Portland, Oregon. The initial inventory consisted of simple lawn and garden tools and equipment as well as a few U-Haul trucks and trailers. The company headquarters was a 1000-square-foot converted ice cream parlor.
Before too long, the public began to see the benefit of renting as opposed to buying items that were used just a few times and then left to take up valuable garage space, and the rentals industry took hold. Grounded in our core principles of caring, collaboration, and stellar customer service, the business grew; company-owned trailers came to replace U-Haul trucks and trailers while adjacent buildings were purchased to make room for a new, two-story warehouse.
In 1996, we moved to our current, 10,000-square-foot warehouse on 2.5 acres in the Hayden Meadows/Delta Park area of Portland. In the years since, IR has continued to grow; a great number of family members, straddling the generations, have joined the ranks alongside outside employees who have become family, keeping pace with new and diversified inventory to better meet our customers’ rental needs.
For 71 years, we have been privileged to serve our Portland-metro clientele. We are, as ever, thankful to those customers who return to us time and again, and we look forward to drawing first-timers into that satisfied, long-term fold.
